49 North Lubricants sells two types of Gear Oil, so what's The Difference Between GL4 and GL5 Gear Oil?
GL4 Is An Industrial Gear Oil Specification
Industrial gear oil is used for gear driven industrial applications, such as conveyors, mills, presses and is meant to protect the gears as they reduce the speed of input shafts and thus increase the torque of their output.
GL5 Is An Automotive Gear Oil Specification
Automotive gear oil is used for axles and differentials in automotive applications to protect the hypoid gears under high load/ speed. GL5 products have more extreme pressure additives and are designed to protect these heavily loaded gear sets from wear.
GL4 and GL5 gear oil are unique products that are not interchangeable. Always consult your owners manual to determine the type of lubricant you need for your specific application. You can learn more about these specifications here.
